Neon Peak Adventure layers a journal mechanic over the exploration loop. Entries unlock as you find named locations and stay searchable across save slots. The journal is the part of the design that gives the title its identity; it transforms the exploration loop from a checklist into a notebook.
The narrative-through-journal pattern rewards thorough play. Players who read every entry pick up plot beats that are not in the main dialogue. Players who skip entries will finish the game and miss most of the depth.
Played across two evenings and a long Toronto TTC subway ride. The format rewards longer sessions and the save preserves journal state across slots.
The weakness is the late-game journal overflow. By chapter five the journal has dozens of entries and the search-by-keyword UI does not scale. A category filter would help. Two-and-a-half stars; the journal is well-designed at small scale and breaks down at full size.
