Neon Flow is a particle-stream arcade where you draw flowing lines to guide a glowing stream of light through obstacle fields. The premise sounds simpler than it plays, and the format works better than I expected.
What works is the responsive drawing input. Your finger or mouse leaves a trail that the light stream follows. Sharper turns slow the stream; smooth curves preserve speed. You learn to draw paths that anticipate obstacle patterns rather than reacting to them.
Forty levels across four chapters. Each chapter introduces one new obstacle type. Spike walls in chapter one. Rotating blades in chapter two. Magnetic deflectors in chapter three. Time-pressure gates in chapter four. The progression respects the player and teaches the format incrementally.
Tested over four TTC subway rides between Yonge-Sheppard and Spadina. The format suits commute play because each level takes about ninety seconds and the auto-save resumes you wherever you stopped. Touch input on phones is the natural fit; the drawing gesture works less well on desktop with mouse-drag.
Where the design earns its rating is the late-chapter level design. By chapter four the levels require pre-planning your drawing route before the stream starts. The pre-plan step adds a strategic layer on top of the reactive drawing skill. Players who skip planning struggle; players who pre-plan succeed.
Where I would push back is the audio. The music is generic ambient electronic that does not match the visual brightness. A more energetic soundtrack would have lifted the experience.
Three-and-a-half stars. Solid particle-stream arcade with thoughtful obstacle progression. Limited by music selection.
