Editor review

Retro Grid Rush is a top-down arena shooter with intentional 16-bit aesthetic. Survive escalating waves on a glowing grid floor. Sixteen enemy types. Twenty waves per campaign run. The format is what Geometry Wars did at 60fps with vector graphics, here remixed for a sprite-based 16-bit homage.

What works is the per-enemy movement variety. Different enemies move on different patterns. Diamonds zigzag. Squares chase straight. Crosses split into smaller crosses on death. Triangles snipe from edges. Reading enemy types and prioritising targets is the format's main skill demand.

Twenty waves across one continuous run. Each wave introduces one new enemy type or remixes the existing roster. The pacing builds tension well. By wave fifteen you are managing 30+ enemies of mixed types simultaneously.

Tested over a weekend at home plus a few TTC sessions. Touch input with virtual stick works fine for the arcade format. Mouse-and-keyboard with WASD-aim is more precise, and gamepad twin-stick is the comfortable third option.

Where the design earns its rating is the visual readability. The 16-bit aesthetic could have been visually noisy, but each enemy type has distinct silhouette and colour. You can identify enemy types at a glance even in crowded waves. This is harder than it looks.

Where I would push back is the campaign length. Twenty waves is short. Most runs end before the format reveals its full depth. Adding a continue mode or post-campaign challenge waves would have lifted this further.

Four stars. Strong retro-aesthetic arena shooter with disciplined visual readability. Recommended for arcade fans who like dense action.
